- • Why won't my computer detect the VX700/5i when I connect the USB cable to tune the DSP?
This is usually a USB handshake or driver conflict. Disconnect the cable, close the TüN® software, and restart your computer. Always use the premium, short factory-included JL Audio USB cable directly into your PC port, avoiding cheap extension cords or hubs.
- • I connected a subwoofer to Channel 5, but there is absolutely no sound output. Why?
Because VXi amplifiers are completely software-driven, audio does not route automatically. You must open the TüN® software, navigate to the "Input MUX" tab, and explicitly route an audio signal to Channel 5 on the digital grid matrix to unmute it.
- • Why does the amplifier status ring flash red and shut down during heavy bass tracks?
The VX700/5i demands heavy, instantaneous current to supply its 300W mono subwoofer channel. If you used thin or cheap copper-clad aluminum (CCA) power wire, the voltage will sag under load, tripping the amp's low-voltage protection. Upgrade to true 4-AWG pure oxygen-free copper (OFC) wiring.
- • Why do I hear a persistent, quiet "hissing" sound from my tweeters even when the volume is down?
This is digital noise floor hiss caused by poor gain staging. It usually happens when the physical input sensitivity (gain) is configured too high inside the TüN® software. Lower the digital input gains and rely on clean pre-out voltage from your head unit instead.
- • Can I use a regular telephone wire to connect my DRC-205 or DRC-260 remote knob?
No. DRC controllers rely on a proprietary digital communication protocol. Standard telephone cords cross the internal pinning incorrectly, completely disabling the volume tracking and the LED status ring. Always use the authentic JL Audio multi-conductor data cable.
- • Can I safely wire a 2-ohm subwoofer to the 5th channel while running 2-ohm cabin speakers on Channels 1-4?
Yes. The VX700/5i is fully stable at 2 ohms across all 5 channels simultaneously, outputting 75W x 4 to your doors and 300W x 1 to your subwoofer. Just ensure no individual speaker load drops below 2 ohms to avoid an over-current shutdown.
- • Why does the amplifier reboot every time my car engine restarts at a stoplight (Auto Stop-Start)?
Starter motors draw massive current during engine refire, dragging the vehicle's line voltage below 10V. The digital processor inside the VXi shuts down instantly to prevent data and firmware corruption. A fresh main car battery or an inline voltage stabilizer fixes this.
- • Is the VX700/5i safe to install in a marine environment or an open jeep trunk?
No. The VXi series is strictly engineered for dry automotive cabins and is **not water-resistant**. It lacks the specialized powder coating and gasketed port seals found on JL's marine equipment. Mount it only in a fully protected, moisture-free area.
